Meeting

The RK Board will be meeting after school in the library conference room
from 4-5pm.  We will be evaluating the year so far and looking forward to
the major events under development.  We will focus a good chunk of our time
on the benefit.

We understand that this meeting has been added to the schedule, so there
will be some who cannot attend.  Unfortunately, the next Board meeting is
not until Jan 30, and we need to discuss a few things now.

RK Update

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've written a standard RK missive, so I know you're
hoping I'll go on and on with this one.  Ah, but first the
always-appreciated abridged version:

Upcoming River Kids meetings - Dec 5 and Dec 12, no meeting Dec 19
ADDITIONAL Board Meeting - there will be an new Board meeting added to the
schedule on Dec 10, 4-5pm in the library conference room.  I know some will
not be able to make it because of the odd timing, but the Board has much to
discuss and cannot wait until the end of January to meet.

Upcoming RK Events - No cleanups scheduled yet during the winter...bunch of
weenies out there can't hack the cold.  Polar Bear Pickup Club anyone?

Looking Ahead - January -
Jan 9 - Special Guests - Tammy and Mike from the Living Lands and Waters
Crew to discuss Green Strategy and Technology
Jan 23 - 6:30pm - RK will host showing of A Sewer Runs Through It - Boyd
Pickup will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the film.  (NOTE -
there was a regular meeting scheduled for 4-5pm but it is being cancelled to
allow for this event.  Pizza beforehand at New City anyone?)

Looking WAY Ahead - May 2-3 - Reserve these dates for kids - This is the
weekend River Kids will take its annual canoeing/camping trip along the
Meremac River.

Now for the full version...by the way, many River Kids have selected to be
on this mailing list directly.  If your River Kid has an email address to
add, send it to me.  If your River Kid does not receive these emails
directly, please fill him or her in.  I do not have time to go over all the
details at meeting because we're busy learning stuff...go figure.

On with the show...We've now had three major meetings using the new format
of snacking in Extended Day and meeting in the library.  Other than a few
minor hiccups, it's gone well.  We've certainly accomplished plenty.

At the first meeting, the elder River Kids introduced new members to the
concept of River Kids and began to lay the foundation for this year's work,
establishing a return to focusing on learning about rivers and taking
action.

Our second meeting was dedicated to learning about water conservation and
seeing water as the "new oil."  We live in a water-rich environment in this
part of the world, so it's easy to miss the fact that there are many rivers
in the world that are literally drying up due largely to diversion tactics
for agriculture or feeding the thirst of an ever-expanding population.  The
kids calculated how much water they might be using as well as how much they
could easily save with some simple changes to behavior.  The goal was for
everyone to walk away thinking about water conservation a little bit more.

Our third meeting, we spent some time viewing a video about green roof
technology and discussing an opportunity to participate in a new green roof
project being developed at New City.  We also watched the section of the
River des Peres documentary about New City River Kids.  We counted how many
times we were on camera and compared...just kidding.   Then the last half of
the meeting we took part in a stream table simulation where each member took
on a role related to the model river, such as fisherman/hunter, commercial
developer, residential developer, industry, recreationists, and
conservationists.  Each group of role-players received a plot of land to
develop along the model of the stream as they saw fit (according to their
role).  Then, they had to discuss, in town hall fashion, how to address the
issues that came up.  Again, the goal was to leave everyone thinking about
the issues, the solutions, and the complexity of resolving inevitable
conflict surrounding valuable resources.

We will continue to explore different ways of thinking about rivers and
experiencing them this year.  We are planning cleanups, field trips, guest
speakers, and hands-on activities for many meetings. Please email me with
ideas for new activities when they come up.

Since we are spending the majority of our large group meeting time on
learning, we will be starting small committees to handle some of the
projects and aspects of actually running an organization.  We will be
sign-up sheets for several groups with the expectation that River Kids will
sign up to help where they are able.  Sheets will be out at the next two
meetings.  The following groups are currently forming:

1) River Sisters - highly motivated girls may sign for this urban exchange
program - This group is coordinated by Charlotte and begins in January.
2) Publicity - This group of linguists will be seeking ways to publish the
story of River Kids in educational journals, magazines and other media.
3) Earth Day Planning Committee - This group will decide what our booth will
look like at Earth Day this year.
4) Merchandising - This group will take charge of selling RK merchandise to
raise additional funds for projects.  Kids in this group will need to spend
some time before or after school selling merchandise.

Meeting days will be decided based on what is best for those who signed up.
Unfortunately, this means some kids may not be able to help on certain
committees.  Other groups will likely be formed as necessary.

So, is that long enough?  I didn't even rave on about the positive energy in
the group or how cool it is to hear a kid say "riparian corridor" in passing
conversation because they just know this stuff...or how amazed many kids
were at how much water we all use.

This is no doubt a lucky "profession," being the leader of such an
enthusiastic and well-intended group.  If they stay the course they have
chosen, there's no doubt in my mind that they will change the world around
them for the better.

Looking forward to some change,

Ben

Possible Grant Writing Opp

www.captainplanetfoundation.org/default.aspx?pid=3&tab=apply

I've gotten wind of an opportunity in which River Kids should be
involved...as some of you know, New City has been considering the idea
of planting a green roofing system over the dining hall. Perhaps the
biggest issue, as is often the case, is finding funding, without
taking funds from elsewhere. The link above is to the Captain Planet
Foundation's website. CPF offers grants for many kinds of green
projects...If there's a family that would be willing to develop a
written proposal, I think there's a good chance we could get the roof
started.

If your family is interested in tackling a linguistic task like this,
please contact me. I'd be glad to speak with you about what exactly
would be expected and support you along the way.

Thanks!

A Sewer Runs Through It

Hello all,

This Wednesday, Nov 12, 7:30pm at the Tivoli...If you still want in, Boyd
can still reserve seats as long as I tell him today.

I know some of you have only recently been added to this email list.  New
members: River Kids is in this documentary (small part) about the River des
Peres.  It was created Boyd Pickup with HEC-TV.  It should be educational,
eye-opening, and fun...If you'd like to attend, just reply with the number
of seats you'd like.

Thanks!

RK Update - Meeting Friday

Hello all!

There's a RK meeting this Friday.  This meeting will be a workshop on Water
Conservation.  People in the field of natural resources are saying that
water is the new oil...There aren't any wars over water just yet, but there
are constant local skirmishes, legal battles and substantial evidence to
suggest that things are getting worse.

It has never been more important to become aware of the conservation issues
facing our rivers and water sources around the globe.  This should be an
eye-opening adventure, especially given the water-rich environment in which
al of us live.

I'm attaching the RK meeting schedule for the year.  I know that many kids
did not take one as they exited the library last meeting.  There were other
important papers attached to the schedule as well.  Make sure your RK family
has all the info by grabbing one at tomorrow's meeting.

Thanks to the RK families who've been coming out to local cleanups.  All our
rivers need attention after the spring flooding, but our adopted River des
Peres has needed special attention.  Anyone who's been out there knows just
how much debris has been stirred up.

It's a great lesson on hydrology as well when you witness a log 2 feet in
diameter hanging fifteen feet up in a tree...The speed and power generated
by impervious surfaces along the banks is astounding.

There is another big cleanup this weekend - Saturday, November 8.  I've sent
info about this and there are signs in the halls with details.  It starts at
9am and it will be COLD.

If you're coming out to the cleanup, bring gloves and wear waterproof boots
if possible.  Rubber gloves under garden gloves can keep the cold water off
of your hands for a while at least.

Also, come for any portion of the day that you can...even 15 minutes of help
will make a difference...especially when added to the 15 minute of 50 other
River Kids!  We have the potential to make a tremendous difference!

I'll be in touch more next week about current events for River Kids.

See you soon!

Liquid Assets - The Story of Our Water Infrastructure

RK Families,

I've recently purchased a copy of the new documentary, "Liquid Assets: The
Story of Our Water Infrastructure."  It tells the somewhat shocking story of
how our underground drinking water, wastewater, and storm water systems in
the U.S. Are past their prime.  It also shares some stories from major
cities about how they are coping.  St. Louis is not a subject city, but it
could have been.  We have a combined system here that can cause (in high
water situations) an overflow of raw storm drain and sewer water straight
into the Mississippi River.  This type of system is discussed as well as the
issues a municipality such as St. Louis faces because of the choices made so
long ago.

If you're interested in buying it, you can Google the title and get there from the main site, or follow the link that the blogger-man made here.  (Not a straight-forward process, I'm afraid, unless you follow the link that the blogger-man made.)  If you'd simply like to borrow it, I bought it for that purpose.  I should have it in my room at school starting Monday.

Don't forget about the upcoming showing of "A Sewer Runs Through It" at the
Tivoli November 12!  River Kids wound up reserving 34 seats, so we will be
there in force!  If you didn't reserve a seat, you may still come to this
event.

If you can't make this one, we'll be publicizing the info on a second
showing at NCS later on.

Rock on!

Reservations for RdP Movie

Originally, I'd asked for everyone to RSVP to me by today so I can
reserve
seats for you. I am going to send in numbers this afternoon so the
can hold
the seats. If you've sent something to me already, please do not send
again. I have counted you. However, I will still count people
through this
evening.

The date is November 12, 7:30pm at the Tivoli Theater in the Loop.

This event is sponsored by HEC and is free. Anyone may show up to the
event
without a reservation. Boyd is just being nice enough to reserve
seats for
those people who helped along the way as the film was being made. RK
Families are on the list.

If you're interested in a second showing, or cannot make it to this
one, we
will be arranging a showing at New City School later on. The date is
yet to
be set, but Boyd (the film-maker) has agreed to sharing the film and his
time.

RSVP for "A Sewer Runs Through It"

FYI - From the email below, I gather there's a chance there may not be
a seat for you if you don't reserve one...I will reserve seats with
Boyd for anyone who emails me before next Friday, October 30. After
that, you can still show up, but there's no guarantee that there will
be a seat for you.

If you would like to attend, simply reply to this email telling me how
many seats you will need. I'll total things up by next Friday and let
Boyd know.

Reminder, this is for the Premiere of "A Sewer Runs Through It" on
Wednesday, November 12, 7:30pm.

This is a free event and open to the public, so friends are welcome.
Tell/Bring anyone you'd like!

Invite!

Attached is an invite to the opening of the new River des Peres
documentary, "A Sewer Runs Through It." John Goodman did the
voiceover! Very cool topic!
AND River Kids are in this film somewhere! I haven't seen it of
course, so I don't know where or for how long...but it should be a
hoot to see us up there on the big screen.
Try to be there if you can...we should fill that theater!

I'm forwarding some info (see below) on a big River des Peres Watershed Coalition event November 8.  There's a flyer attached as well if you have a place to hang one.

However, there are some things going on this weekend as well...if you're able and willing.  There is a prairie grass planting along the Riverfront Trail being operated by the Grace Hill Americorps Rangers.  The details are on the events page at Confluence Greenway's site: http://www.confluencegreenway.org/m-events.php   This site has TONS of good events in and around the Confluence of the MO and MISS Rivers.

There's even information on that haunted maze I mentioned before...it's in Godfrey, IL...it's $6 for adults and $4 for kids.  This is the LAST weekend it will be open for the season.

able to help at one of our upcoming events - the inaugural Route 66
Festival at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge on Saturday, October 4. We
need 45 volunteers to help with parking, car show functions,
administration of surveys, clean up, and other general activities. We
have a variety of shifts varying in duration from 9am to 7pm that we
are looking to fill.

Thanks for your help in the past, and please let me know if you're
available to help with this event. If so, I'll put you in touch with

RK Update

Hello, River Kids and Families!

First let me thank those of you who found the time to chip in along the River des Peres last week...in short, River Kids provided about half the volunteers! We made a HUGE difference, and there were many grateful individuals. The attached picture is of Sara Bewen and Tyler Doll with a Stream Team volunteer dragging just a TINY portion of their garbage loot out of the river.

I'm particularly glad that several families were there for this in light of comments made at recent RK Board Meetings. The RK Board was formed to give the kids a place to share their voices and establish a direction for the organization. One of the central themes to our two Board meetings so far has been a desire to focus our attention and activity back on the rivers, learning more rivers and interacting with them directly. We'll be participating in many more river-related activities this year, including many more cleanups!

Thanks to all the RK Board members for their extra work in preparation for this year. The meetings have been therapeutic for some and empowering for all. I'm personally thrilled to hear the passion in the voices of these leaders as they tackle the issues related to being a growing organization. While the increased membership and the energy and enthusiasm for last year's projects were undeniably good things, the side effects of getting so large so quickly needed to be addressed. We are well on our way to doing just that thanks to the Board.

There are numerous changes to the RK structure and programs this year in an attempt to solidify River Kids as a positive force. We will be meeting in the library this year, instead of the congested Performing Arts space. All RK will receive snack through the Extended Day program before attending meetings to avoid distractions and cleanup issues. All large group meetings will be focused on learning about rivers and will include field trips, guest speakers, and activities designed to bolster our collective river knowledge. The benefit is being redesigned to be more directed at our selected cause(and away from celebrating RK) and intentionally designed to be less extravagant. In fact, we are starting from scratch this year and may windup with a cleanathon or concert instead of a City Museum experience. Also, there will be no new projects this year; we will focus on bringing closure to old projects before considering new ones.

Another important issue discussed by the Board was the need to be inclusive and inviting to new members, but directly requiring that members be committed to being a true River Kid, not someone who comes for a good snack and the benefit party.

The Board felt it was crucial that we communicate to families more up front about what it really means to be a River Kid. Thus, they decided to host an Open House for all RK Families, focused on sharing the goals for the year and setting expectations for all before signup deadlines roll around. That way families can make an educated decision about whether River Kids is actually for them.

This RK Open House is this Friday afternoon from 4-5pm in the library. There will be a slideshow and some small presentations from a few of the RK Board members regarding the year. Then there will be a Q&A session for all.

I'm telling you all this information because everyone would benefit from the chance to hear about the kids' plans for the year. Thus, even though this Open House was marketed to new families, I thought I'd extend this explanation of our intent and an invitation to previous members and parents as well.

I hope everything is going well for you all. Please feel free to contact me with questions, especially if you can't make the Open House!

Rock on River Kids!

Ben

Route 66 Art Project

If your child is interested in helping paint the backdrop for the
stage at
the Route 66 Festival up north, he/she may still get in on the
project...We
start painting Monday after school in the art room, 3:45-5pm.

We will paint again Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday if necessary.

Your child does not need to commit to all of these days. We will take
help
on any or all days according to your schedule. We'd really LOVE to have
kids come every day if possible though.

If you have any questions or need more info, let me know. Shannah and
I are
heading this up together, so you may ask her questions as well.

Art Opportunity

Trailnet is putting on a big Route 66 Festival October 4. They asked
if we
might have some kids that would be able to put together a backdrop for
their
stage. Shannah, the new art teacher, is interested in helping out with
this, but it would have to be done after school a few days this week and
next...

Please check with you child and see if s/he might be interested...let me
know ASAP and we'll set up a few dates for your child to consider. We
really only need a few kids, so I'll take the first ones that respond
and go
from there.

Thanks!

Flyer

Hello All!

As many of you already know, tremendous damage was done by the recent flooding in Brentwood and U. City along the tributaries to the River des Peres.

On Tuesday afternoon, the River des Peres Watershed Coalition invited people out to help clean up along Deer Creek near Laclede Station and Marshall.   Since it was short notice only 6 people made it out to help...Those 6 people almost filled one huge dumpster by themselves, but there's still much to be cleaned.

At a meeting with some of the River Kids yesterday, the kids decided to try to publicize this weekends efforts and really try to make a difference.

If you have the chance, please consider joining forces with others this Saturday with the RdPWC members and River Kids as they continue the efforts.

I've attached a flyer for your sake, and so you might print or send it on to others.  The more help we have, the better this area will look come Saturday evening.

Big thanks to Jack Biggs for making the flyer!

Ben

Print it out and post it somewhere where lots of people will see it!

Flood Clean-Up Tomorrow

Take one look at the pictures attached and you'll be blown away by the
power of our local streams...

The email below is from the Director of the River des Peres Watershed
Coalition...they are running an emergency cleanup based out of Deer
Creek Park...Based on the photos, this is a disaster requiring
TREMENDOUS help...

SO, if you can spare even a half-hour and some muscle, please come
chip in...it's not going to be pretty or easy...but if you can hack
it, your help will be greatly appreciated!! You'll need boots or old
shoes that can get destroyed, gloves, and a water bottle...they may
have some supplies on hand, but since this is being thrown together
quickly I don't know what they will have to offer.

And if you have access to resources, like a Bobcat or a wench, I'm
sure it will come in handy...let me know and I'll connect you with the
right people.

If you think about it, throw on your River Kid t-shirt for good
measure...it would be way cool to see a bunch of RK tees stretched out
across the river!

Let me know if you have any questions...

Ben

Subject: [RdPWC] UPDATE: Flood Clean-Up Tomorrow

Good evening!

Today I was out and saw some of the damage along Deer Creek and River
des Peres for myself. It was quite amazing. I visited both of the
sites that the River des Peres Watershed Coalition has 'adopted' -
River des Peres at Mona Terrace in University City and Deer Creek at
Deer Creek Park in Maplewood. There was more water than on a normal
late summer day, but the floodwaters have certainly come down (as you
can see in the attached photos).

As far as the conditions of the streams, the RdP (in that stretch at
least) looked relatively good - not much more than the usual trash.
Deer Creek on the other hand looked bad as can be seen in the photos.
We just had a cleanup there a couple of weeks back and now there is
more trash there than I have ever seen. At Brentwood Blvd, there are
two boats (still attached to their trailers) stuck at the bridge
pilings which are holding a bunch more tree debris which is then
holding lots of plastic trash. At Deer Creek Park (aka. Rocket Park),
there is a bunch more stuff in and along the stream. Immediately
downstream at the shopping center, there is still more trash,
including some of the lumber from an upstream lumberyard, several
tires, and even a dumpster!

Based on what we saw, a few of us at the Coalition decided that it
would be worthwhile to try to get out there and clean up some of the
mess. So, we are planning to meet at Deer Creek Park beginning at
1pm. There will be folks in and out all afternoon and into the
evening, so feel free to come out at any time! I would suggest
parking in the lot for the Deer Creek Shopping Center, as there is
limited parking at the park itself.

So, I hope to see many of you tomorrow afternoon and evening at Deer
Creek!

Danelle

River Cleanup Cancelled

Floods have caused the cancellation of this weekend's A-B Cleanup.
Thanks a
ton to those families who offered their time.

If you're still hoping to get out and get involved this weekend, there
are
tons of opportunities to help out in Brentwood and U.City where the
River
des Peres and its tributaries wreaked havoc. Danelle Haake (Interim
Director of the River des Peres Watershed Coalition is helping out in
Brentwood. If you want to join her efforts, call 314-941-0489.

Our friends at Trailnet suffered serious damage at their Grant's Trail
offices as well.

If you want to volunteer there, call 314-520-9999. They need
dehumidifiers
and help with cleanup.

I hope you all have managed to make it through the heavy rains alright!

Helping Out A Friend

I know you all are familiar with Chad Pregracke's organization, Living
Lands
and Waters, but I don't know if you have met Tammy Becker, their
Education
Program Director. She's amazing. She wrote me to tell me of a friend
of
hers who's moving to the STL area and is seeking a position as a
Director or
Project Coordinator for a non-profit. I don't know her myself (or
even her
last name at this point), but here's a quote from Tammy's email, and
Tammy
speaking highly of someone really means something in my book:

Tammy: "Erin¹s a really spectacular personSshe graduated in 99 with a
Sociology/Women¹s Studies degree, went on to do Peace Corps for 3
years (and
also got Volunteer of the Year award!), after PC was accepted into the
Shriver Peace Worker program in Baltimore, MD, where last year she got
her
Master¹s in Public Policy with an emphasis on non-profit management.
Not to
mention she¹s the FUNNIEST chick with the biggest heart and more passion
than anyone I¹ve ever met! Anyone who meets her, LOVES HER!!!"

Erin is moving to town after October and is actively seeking a
position. I
know that some of you have connections with various organizations and
might
have some leads. If you are aware of an open position or if there's a
person to whom she should send her resume, any contact information
would be
greatly appreciated. She's searching from Baltimore right now and has
hit
many dead ends.

You may send info to me and I'll pass it along.

Thanks for helping out Tammy in helping her friend...Tammy really
appreciates it!

RK Update - Important Info Regarding This Year

RK Families,

Thanks for all your notes welcoming Bella into the world...she has been
nothing but a wonder so far. We're thrilled!

RK info - After meeting with the Board last week, there are a number of
changes that will be occurring to the organization and how it operates
in
order to improve the River Kids experience. Here's a brief list of
some of
the changes in play:

1) Meetings will be held in the library from 4-5pm. Bigger space in
which
to operate.
2) Snack will be offered as part of membership through Extended Day,
as with
other Talents Classes. This should help minimize distractions. River
Kids
will get snack at 3:30 under Tobie's supervision and then come to the
library after eating. (4th-6th Grades normally eat at 4pm...RK will be
allowed to go early.)
3) Large Group Meetings will be focused on educational activities
regarding
rivers. (Small Groups will still be formed for special projects and
will
meet separate from the large group during the week.)
4) The benefit will be planned differently this year. This is a major
topic
of discussion at the next Board Meeting. The central sentiment of the
Board
was that we like giving to others and some flashiness is good to attract
attention to the cause, but we need to have a less extravagant affair
that
is more centered around the cause rather than just hype. We are
considering
a variety of alternative formats, including a benefit concert, a
clean-a-thon or walk-a-thon, and others...
5) The benefit is NOT the place to focus on celebrating the year for
River
Kids...that needs to be a separate event for RK Families alone where
speeches are really heard and appreciated. No direct plans are in
place for
this event, but it will be in development this year.
6) The RK Board will continue to meet monthly to make guiding
decisions and
discuss issues further. The Board will be a necessary venue for
problem-solving that did not exist last year.

Additional Plans/Thoughts:

- RK will not be taking on any new projects this year. We will be
focusing
on bringing closure to old projects and educating ourselves more about
rivers.
- RK will be involved in more cleanups this year. Hands-on
involvement is
part of being a River Kid.
- This year we will host a River Kids Open House on September 26, 4-5pm.
The goal will be to present potential members with the most up-to-date
and
accurate information regarding the organization and expectations for
members. Our primary goal is to steer away any kids that are only
superficially interested, or interested only in the benefit dinner
because
of its flashiness. We also hope that returning members might be able
to get
their heads wrapped around the year by being there. So ALL RK
families are
invited as well. The Board members are expected to be there if
possible to
give a presentation.
- Field trips and Guest Speakers should be considered as part of
meetings.

Projects currently in play:

1) Rain Harvesting - Installation being completed this fall.
Unveiling/Recognition ceremony in development.
2) Herbie Project - Herbie is still waiting on a home. City Museum has
assured me that we will be able to discuss possibilities very soon. The
completion of the new roof complex has occupied them since we first
brought
this idea to them.
3) Mural Project - No new info. We were officially denied permission to
paint at the end of last year. However, we are considering working with
Trailnet to seek out a new location that will be okay with all.
4) River Kids Urban Exchange (Mentoring Project) - This group will
need to
begin meetings early to decide how this project evolves.
5) Benefit - This group will be starting from scratch this year to
discuss
how this event can be dramatically improved.

I hope this update gives all of you an idea of how much consideration
has
been given to improving this organization. The Board Meeting was a
testament to the passion that River Kids have and should have for being
people who truly affect positive change. I've never been prouder to
be a
part of River Kids.

Rock on, River Kids!

Ben

familiar with them, take a closer look...they are tied to many amazing
active living projects and river-related events. Their event calendar

RK Events - Don't Miss Out!

The Board Meeting was fantastic the other day...Thanks to this
dedicated,
enthusiastic group for spending the extra time. I am working with
Tobie to
schedule the next Board meeting and the new member meeting we discussed.
I'll keep you posted.

If all goes the way this Board Meeting did, this year will be
unbelievably
better than any previous year.

For now, I'd like you all to know about three specific River Kid-
friendly
events. They are optional, but more than ever, I think it's important
for
River Kids and their families to make a strong showing whenever
possible.
Those of you who have attended cleanups together know just how
powerful the
hands-on experience can be. It opens eyes, poses questions, and
validates
our cause...It's the most tangible way to feel like you're making a
difference. So here are the events to consider:

1) This weekend - Friday, if you're off school or want to take off,
there is
a HUGE river festival up a the Columbia Bottoms Conservation area. RK
toyed
with the idea of running a booth, but our group skipping out on school
seemed a bit unreasonable...and it's not a fitting field trip for the
whole
4th-6th...

RK did sponsor a booth though...the H2Orchestra (water-based musical
instruments) will be there thanks to us. I'll be going up there for a
short
while just to represent River Kids a bit...Anyone else would be
welcome to
join me.

2) MO River Relief Cleanup - this Saturday. Following the festival is a
huge cleanup...MO River Relief has been doing this for a long time and
they
know how to make these events a TON of fun...Worth going if you can
make it!
You might see Chad Pregracke or Jeff Barrow (co-authors of From the
Bottom
Up) there as well. You can get details and register for the event at
www.riverrelief.org

3) Tammy Becker, of Living Lands and Waters, emailed us to invite
River Kids
families to attend their upcoming re-scheduled Anheuser-Busch Cleanup
downtown on Saturday, September 20. If you're interested in attending
that
one, let me know and I'll get you details about where to meet and
such...no
registration for that one. You would undoubtedly see Chad and the
rest of
the crew there...And if you've never seen them in action, you're really
missing out! They are a hoot!

4) Watershed-Wide Water Monitoring Day with the River des Peres
Watershed
Coalition in Forest Park...October 4. No training necessary. Join
experienced STREAM Team members at 9am at the Forest Park Visitor's
Center
and head out into the field to assigned sites. Lunch is provided at
the end
of the monitoring around noon. This would be a GREAT chance for some
of our
kids and family members to get acquainted with water monitoring. We
need to
let them know if you are joining, so if you are interested in this one,
please tell me soon.

So I know this is pre-season for RK, technically, but for all you die-
hard
river-lovers, these are some GREAT opportunities.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Invitation to Board Meeting

Hello, Everyone!

I hope this note finds you all in good health and good humor...Life
keeps
teaching me that both are necessary! Right now I'm waiting on a baby
that
may be born any day, and at the same time we had to say goodbye to our
long-standing pet, Kenobe, who suddenly became ill and had to put to
sleep.
What a wacky roller coaster life can be, huh? In light of all this, I
just
told my wife, Jaime, for whom Kenobe's death was particularly hard (It
was
really her dog...her first "baby" if you will.), that I'll comfort her
as
much as I can, but she'd better not ask me to name the new baby after
the
dog.

So it won't be long before River Kids is in full swing...We will
probably
start full meetings in early October. I'll make sure you get the
dates as
soon as they exist.

In the meantime, I'd like to invite the elder members of River Kids,
and the
most dedicated, to show up for a small group meeting next Friday,
September
5 from 4-5pm. It is my intent to establish a small group of individuals
(who know what it truly means to be River Kid and who believe in the
cause)
to meet regularly, perhaps once a month, throughout the year to mull
over
the major issues at hand. River Kids has phenomenal potential and
growing
resources, yet it needs roots...these kids will be the foundation around
which the organization continues to thrive.

This first meeting will likely include some discussion regarding these
possible issues and more:
- size of the group - too large? How do we deal with that?
- Definition of a River Kid - expectations for members
- Major Projects for the year - Management, Selection
- Logistics - meeting schedule, snack (maybe with regular Extended Day
then
come to RK at 4pm?), meeting times, who leads meeting, how will
meetings be
run
- Mission
- Any other ideas brought by the kids

Parents are welcome to attend this meeting and are welcome to help
guide the
discussion a bit when appropriate.

Please email me soon if your child will be able to attend the
meeting. I'm
sorry it's the first week of school as well, but I'm pressed for time
as is
and would REALLY like to be there for this meeting.

Thanks,

Ben

River des Peres recreational use protection

Hey, All!

If you have time read the whole message below...if not, know that it basically states that the River des Peres and some of its tributaries  are currently having their status as "rivers" reviewed...they are being classified as rivers!!! That's big news, as they will receive protections under the law. However, they will only receive full protection if it can be proven that they are used for full-body contact recreation. There is a MODNR meeting being held at Powder Valley tomorrow night for those who have evidence to present. If any of you have the time and interest, it would weigh greatly on the situation to have adults and kids present who can talk about their connection to the River des Peres. Read on if I've piqued your interest...

See you soon!

Subject: [PossibleSpam] [RdPWC] Stream recreational use protection

Hi all -

Black Creek, Deer Creek below Black Creek, and the River des Peres downstream from Deer Creek are going from unclassified to classified stream status this year--thanks to Ted Heisel, who lives near Black Creek and submitted data to the state showing that the creek maintained a permanent flow and supported aquatic life. As a classified stream, Black Creek enjoys much greater protection from the discharge of pollutants from sewage plants, industries, etc. This is all to the good! And because a classified stream can't flow into an unclassified stream (state rules), Black Creek's change in status meant that Deer Creek and the River des Peres had to be classified, as well.

Ordinarily, with classification comes protection for whole body contact recreation--swimming and other activities that provide some likelihood of getting water in your mouth, nose, ears, etc. Fecal coliform and E. coli levels in the water have to be kept below state standards, which means that discharges of treated wastewater from sewage facilities have to be disinfected.

But this is Missouri, and the state, in the form of the Clean Water Commission (which sets the water quality rules) and Dept. of Natural Resources (which implements the rules), is hell bent on not enacting protections that will cost dischargers--like MSD, whose sewer overflows empty into Black and Deer creeks and the RdP and which wants to avoid disinfection in the worst way. So DNR will be contracting for "studies" this summer and fall to see if they can show that these newly-classified streams can't actually support recreational use. If the streams aren't deep enough (a meter deep in pools, a half-meter deep on average) at the three locations they check, then they're deemed too shallow to support whole body contact recreation and they won't get the full protection against bacteria.

The key to this, though, is that if people use the streams for recreation (or have done so any time since 1975), that use has to be protected. If they use it for swimming or other whole body contact recreation, full bacterial protections have to be retained. If they use it for secondary contact recreation (wading, fishing, etc.), lesser bacterial protections are imposed.

So for these newly classified streams to keep their new protections against bacteria (and for us to be able to use them safely), we have to tell DNR where and how we use the streams for recreation. There will be an opportunity to do so this Wednesday evening (6 to 8 PM) at the Powder Valley Nature Center (11715 Cragwold Road, Kirkwood), where DNR is holding a public meeting on its proposed removal of protections on 90 streams around the state. They're bringing a laptop with mapping software, so that people can show them exactly where they use their stream.

There is also a comment period open for submitting written information until August 31. Just send your information on your use of these streams to John Hoke, UAA Coordinator, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Water Protection Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO
65102-0176. You can also email him at john.hoke@dnr.mo.govjohn.hoke%40dnr.mo.gov,  john.hoke%40dnr.mo.gov, or fax to
573-522-9920.

For more info on this effort by the state to remove protections on streams, you can go to the Coalition for the Environment web page at http://www.moenviron.org/UAA.asp or call me at 314-727-0600. I'm more than happy to talk about this stuff.

I'm also copying a Coalition e-Alert to the end of this message for a little more info on the issue.

Hope to see you at Powder Valley Wednesday!

Your Chance to Speak Out for Safe Streams!

Do you think kids should be able to play safely in Missouri streams, without fear of exposure to bacteria that can cause typhoid fever, hepatitis, gastroenteritis, dysentery, and other illnesses? Do you want to make sure your stream is safe for recreational uses like swimming, playing, wading, and fishing?

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is proposing to remove protections against bacteria on 90 streams across the state, and now they want to hear from you. The Department is holding public meetings in seven cities this month, starting tonight in Thornfield, Missouri (see details below). The St. Louis region meeting is Wednesday, August 6.

Why would DNR want to exempt streams from the protections the Clean Water Act envisioned for all the nation's streams? The answer: To save sewer agencies and other facilities--public and private--the cost of disinfecting the otherwise treated wastewater that they discharge into streams. Meanwhile, DNR has spent many hundreds of thousands of public dollars on studies, called Use Attainability Analyses (UAAs), that are used to justify these exemptions.

DNR's UAAs rely almost exclusively on stream depth to determine whether a stream can support swimming and other recreation. If the stream isn't deep enough--at least a meter deep in holes or a half-meter on average--at the few sites sampled (which total only 5-10% of the stream's length), the state assumes people can't swim in the stream and exempts it from protections normally required for swimming and other "whole body contact recreation."

Kids and even adults often engage in whole body contact recreation in much shallower water, however. On a hot day, lying down in ten inches of a cool stream entices children and adults alike. And it's quite possible that people enjoy locally-known swimming holes located on the
90-95% of the stream not surveyed. In either case, exempting their stream would leave these people exposed to dangerous bacteria.

But the greatest flaw of the UAAs is that there is no requirement to contact or interview local residents about their use of the stream, even though any such use by anyone since 1975 would require that protections against bacteria be kept in place. Indeed, few UAAs have bothered to include any interviews with those who would know how and where a given stream is used.

When DNR compounded that omission by barely publicizing the public comment period on the proposed exemptions, the Coalition sent news releases to every county where streams were recommended for exemption and sent letters to many local residents asking them to submit
information on their streams. The heavy response and the public's displeasure with the state's efforts to remove protections from streams prompted DNR to quickly extend the comment deadline to August 31st and schedule a series of public meetings--while making the groundless accusation that we had spread "misinformation" and caused "public alarm that is totally unnecessary."

You will therefore have two opportunities this month to make your voice heard on behalf of safe and clean streams. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is holding public meetings during August at the following locations:

* Thornfield - Aug. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thornfield School, Hwy
95, immediately north of Thornfield
* St. Louis - Aug. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Powder Valley
Conservation Nature Area, 11715 Cragwold Road, Kirkwood
* Poplar Bluff - Aug. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the department's
Southeast Regional Office, 2155 North Westwood Boulevard, Poplar Bluff
* Kansas City - Aug. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the department's
Kansas City Regional Office, 500 NE Colbern Road, Lee's Summit
* Springfield - Aug. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the department's
Southwest Regional Office, 2040 W. Woodland, Springfield
* Macon - Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the department's Northeast
Regional Office, 1709 Prospect Drive, Macon
* Jefferson City - Aug. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the department's
Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson
City

While we expect these meetings to be, in large part, an attempt to repair DNR's image, they will also be an opportunity to express your views on UAAs and the state's stream exemption effort as well as to provide specific information about how and where you use your favorite
streams. Please include information on non-whole body contact recreation, such as wading, boating, or fishing, since these also expose people to bacteria and viruses and should require at least some level of protection.

Those attending the St. Louis meeting should note that UAAs are being done this summer and fall on Black Creek, the portion of Deer Creek below Black Creek, and the segment of the River des Peres downstream of Deer Creek. If you have information about recreational use of these
streams, please provide it at the meeting or in written comments. It's entirely possible that these streams will be added to the other 90 streams recommended for exemption from bacteria protection later this year--unless DNR hears that people use them.

For maps of the affected streams, short comment forms you can submit, and more information about the UAA process, please see the Coalition's UAA webpage.

Written comments--as detailed as possible about how and where you or others use your stream--will be accepted until August 31, 2008. Please send them to:

Water Protection Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0176

The Open Space Council » Operation Clean Stream

http://www.openspacestl.org/operation-clean-stream/

If you can make it, Operation Clean Stream is one of the biggest and longest
running annual river cleanups in existence.  If you're family is interested
in attending, mark your calendars for August 23.  You can choose your own
site from the list of sites at the link above, but if there are a bunch of
people that want to go to one site together, I'll be glad to coordinate.

As we get closer I'll see who's interested in attending and maybe we can
choose a site.

Happy summer!

Ben

Washington River Festival WILL be held this Saturday
but River Clean-up is Cancelled

Yes, the Missouri River will be in flood stage this Saturday in Washington, MO. At these levels, the staging area for the Missouri River Clean-up scheduled for Saturday, June 14, will be underwater. Because of this, and safety concerns about taking large numbers of volunteers on a flooding river, we have cancelled the Clean-up scheduled for this Saturday.

But the River Festival, located on higher ground at the pavilion at Washington Riverfront Park, is still going on!

We hope that you'll still make it to the festival, from 10:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday June 14. We'll be celebrating our amazing Big Muddy even as she shows one of her wilder faces. It will be an experience to remember!

There will be music, a presentation by the World Bird Sanctuary <http://list-manage.com/track/click?u=e19adac188abf87e09113de49&id=2653f52ec2&e=e3gEBaHiIS><http://list-manage.com/track/click?u=e19adac188abf87e09113de49&id=2653f52ec2&e=e3gEBaHiIS> , educational exhibits by river biologists and non-profits, a river nature walk, kid's activities, food and more! A special new addition will be the Augusta Brewing Company <http://list-manage.com/track/click?u=e19adac188abf87e09113de49&id=35843e8689&e=e3gEBaHiIS><http://list-manage.com/track/click?u=e19adac188abf87e09113de49&id=35843e8689&e=e3gEBaHiIS>  from across the river, serving handcrafted beers and rootbeer floats!

Although the public river-based clean-up is cancelled, Missouri River Relief <http://list-manage.com/track/click?u=e19adac188abf87e09113de49&id=05d9cd9bff&e=e3gEBaHiIS><http://list-manage.com/track/click?u=e19adac188abf87e09113de49&id=05d9cd9bff&e=e3gEBaHiIS>  will still be onsite, with our boats, trashbags and nets. Our trained crew will still be pulling large trash items out of the river. Look for us if you want to help pick up trash along the riverside.

Special thanks to local organizers Gloria Attoun Bauermeister and Mike Smith for helping us put together what will still be a fantastic day on the river. Thanks also to Missouri DNR, LAD Foundation, the Washington Boat Club and John and Alex Jansen for sponsoring this wonderful event and extra special thanks to all the exhibitors, musicians and vendors that will make the festival happen.

See you in Washington!
